Cleanings & Exams in Summerville SC
We simply cannot say it enough—if you want a lifetime free of oral health problems, you must be diligent about scheduling and keeping routine appointments for cleanings and exams.
These may not seem like services you should spend a lot of time worrying about fitting into your schedule. The truth is, however, these basic preventive services provide the foundation for the healthiest smile possible for you and your family.
At Azalea Dental, we want to be your dental home for life. Of course, we’re always happy to help a patient in sudden need of care. But building a history of your oral health helps us monitor changes over a period of time. This allows us to become familiar with your history and be on the lookout for potential problems, addressing them before they become serious and costly to fix.
Comprehensive Dental Exams
We conduct thorough dental exams that provide us with an overall picture of your oral health. We don’t always recommend x-rays, but if it’s been a while since you’ve had them, Dr. Riley may suggest we take some to make sure your records are current. An intraoral camera gives us a very clear view of the surfaces of your teeth, and we can even share the images with you on a monitor so you can see what we see.
Dr. Riley will perform a visual check as well, noting the current condition of your teeth and any changes since your last visit. A very important part of every exam is an oral cancer screening. Oral cancer is aggressive but highly treatable if found in its earliest stages.
Exams and dental cleanings go hand-in-hand to form the foundation of your preventive oral health care. We are proud of our highly trained hygienists who perform thorough, gentle cleanings that eliminate the plaque and tartar that lingers on your teeth.
You should know that no matter how well you brush and floss, this only does part of the job. This is because brushing at home simply cannot remove tartar. Tartar is a hard calcified deposit that can only be removed by our hygienist using special tools.
Routine professional cleanings also give us the opportunity to check for any signs of gum disease. If we find that you do have gum disease, we’ll develop a treatment plan to get your oral health back on track. In many instances, gum disease exists without any visible symptoms. You may have a serious infection and not even know it until you visit us for a cleaning.
Of course, a dental cleaning should also leave you with a sparkling smile, so we finish all cleanings with a polishing technique that uses a gentle abrasive to leave you with a smile that's not only healthier but beautiful as well!

At Azalea Dental, we’re passionate about patient education. Our feeling is that when you understand all the benefits of a healthy smile, you will stay motivated to follow through with these important preventive services. Dr. Riley and our team enjoy taking the time to get to know you personally. Learning more about you helps build trust and provides us with information that allows us to personalize your care to fit all your needs.
